THANK YOU 2025

I don't know how, but another year has passed which means the Rankaroid blog is now 2 years old. I can't believe it... this year seriously happened in an instant. I'm so thankful for my friends this year who made this year so much fun.

A lot and not a lot happened this year. I had a lot of free time and I had a health scare halfway through, but now I'm well and good. I'm not really sure how the future is going to look but I'm told that a lot of people my age aren't sure so I think it's okay to feel a bit lost. Maybe I'll set myself on a path soon... Don't know!

Let's review the things I said last year why don't we...

Ha....ha.............HAHA...................

No AA7. Try again next year. No KH4. Try again next year. Missing link.........GOT CANCELLED LOOOOOOOL.... :,V

And.... you know what...? I'll take AITSF3. No sleep is more like 1.5 since it takes place between 1 and 2 but it's still technically the third game in the series.

  1. I try my best to..
  2. Honestly this year I drew A LOT for me-standards. I have (cough) Danganronpa Another to thank for that. I've been a little sloppy on studies though... There's still time though
  3. Let's move on.
  4. I tried. I really did. I have like 5 different attempts at a Dolly model :,( Blender is so hard and takes me a long time. But I haven't quite given up yet. I just have a lot more things I want to do before picking 3D back up. Har har...
  5. Yeah did better on this. Though I'm pretty sure the only game I really played myself was Pokemon Z-A :P

My goals for 2026.... Not too sure. I guess it's going to be pretty similar.
  1. Draw and study more
  2. Read at least 2 books per month (keeping my expectations realistic..)
  3. More Aquamarine
  4. ...Make some moolah on the side
These goals are pretty vague but I don't really have anything better. Hehe...

Tonight I had a chill night with my parents on new year's eve... New years is also my dad's bday so we double up on celebrations. I feel like the magic of the holiday season wasn't very strong this year but that's ok! I'm spending it with my loved ones so it's still special.

I was going to do the Rankaroid 2025 favourites posts sooner but omg I am SO bad at planning things so I'll do that tomorrow. I do know what I'm going to put on there though :-D

Happy new year! I hope 2026 treats us all well!

BOOK REVIEW

My goal is to start reading more so that's what I've been doing between drawing and FFXIV (lol). I wanted to keep track of what I've read and have comments on the books so why not utilize the good old blog?

All reviews will be as spoiler-free as possible ;-)

Sunrise on the Reaping (2025) by Suzanne Collins

My confession: until a few weeks ago, I had never watched or read a lick of the Hunger Games. I knew the first like 10 minutes of the film where Katniss volunteers as tribute and also about the Peeta vs Gale ship wars, but other than that I didn't really know anything. When I was a kid the films were a huge deal so obviously I picked up a few things from that, but I still hadn't watched the films in full... which is why I watched all of them in the span of 2 days.

This was spurred on by seeing a lot of Hunger Games tweets as well as the Sunrise on the Reaping movie trailer coming out and I don't have much better to do so I watched all of the movies.

(Pictured: my letterboxd.)

But this isn't Rankaroid Film Reviews... let's get onto the actual book. Sunrise on the Reaping is a prequel book about the 50th Hunger Games (the trilogy takes part during the 74th and 75th Hunger Games) and follows Haymitch Abernathy, the district 12 mentor to Katniss and Peeta in the trilogy. I feel the need to apologize for not reading the entire series and jumping to read SotR first. I didn't think I would enjoy it so much so I went for the quicker and easier route. After reading SotR, I definitely want to go back and read the books to get the full story.

It's bad to say but I do enjoy the Hunger Games for the Hunger Games aspect. It's undeniably entertaining and makes me no better than the average Capitol resident... I guess that's why things like fanganronpas are so popular but that is completely besides the point. It was really interesting to see the inner workings of Haymitch's mind as well as how he came to be the jaded mentor that we know. I am very fond of the cast, especially the district 12 tributes. With double the amount of tributes, it means that there are 4 tributes per district this time- 2 girls and 2 boys.

The biggest thing that weighs on you while reading is that you know for a fact that only Haymitch survives but you just don't know the details yet. You meet so many characters with the knowledge that they're inevitably dying which makes things far more bittersweet. There's no hope because you know that all of these kids will die one way or another, often in very grotesque ways.

Aside from Haymitch, I found myself really attached to Lou Lou, a district 12 tribute. I can't delve into the details without spoiling the book, but I'm very fond of themes of identity and look-alikes. I also imagined her to have the likeness of Dolly (my OC) but as her young counterpart, which added to my attachment.

This is the part where I add a star rating but I am REALLY BAD at giving number ratings. So here I will say: I really enjoyed reading this book. I found that I couldn't put the book down, it's just so suspenseful. I know I'll enjoy reading the trilogy and the other prequel book, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Venus in Furs (1870) by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch

I feel like there's quite a gap between this and the previous entry but I wanted to read titles that interested me and what's more intriguing than a book by the namesake of "sadomasochism" or in modern times "S&M". BDSM is interesting to me and, no, that’s not a sexual confession or anything I just enjoy reading into the dynamics and how people interact with it. This blog is SFW but I’ll be touching upon sexual themes in the next 2 entries so if that’s not for you, thanks for reading up to here. We’re all adults here… probably? If not, stop reading..shoo…

Where do I even start with this book? I guess a brief synopsis. The narrator has a dream about a beautiful woman, the goddess Venus, wearing furs and sitting next to a fireplace. He’s so enamored by her and wakes up from his dream to find a painting exactly like it in his friend’s house. His friend, Severin von Kusiemski, is also in the picture, being used as a footstool by Venus who is holding a whip, but Severin is notably younger in the painting. This prompts Severin to tell the narrator about this painting by reading a manuscript describing the events leading up to the creation of the painting, “THE CONFESSIONS OF A SUPERSENSUAL MAN”. It details Severin meeting a young widow named Wanda von Dunajew, who he pursues and asks to become her slave.

For being a book about female dominance and masochism, it’s surprisingly not as explicit as you’d expect. There are sexual scenes definitely, but the most that’s described is kissing and plentiful foot kissing because Severin enjoys displaying his servitude.

Also Severin has a thing for ladies wearing fur, hence the title of the book. He compares Wanda to the likes of Venus and begs her to punish him specifically while wearing furs. This is a fairly significant part but I had no idea where to place this.

The confessions of a supersensual man are pretty absurd. This book isn’t particularly long, but I had to read it in intervals because I found the inner thoughts and dialogue from Severin to be so crazy that I had to close my reading app. This was obviously a very shocking book for its time in the 1800s, but it still proves to shock 200 years later.

I really don’t think comedy was intended, but I kept laughing at sections of the book.

Moments like this made me laugh and I don’t think I should have been…😭 Wanda really tickles me.

Severin, as you may guess, is an intense masochist. Wanda does not mince her words and warns Severin that she does what she wants and may not stay faithful to him. Severin doesn’t care (or does he?) and begs to be her slave regardless. He’s actually inconsistent about this because at any sign of infidelity, he freaks the fuck out but at other times he’s content with being Wanda’s slave regardless of if she’s with another man or not. Severin is easily the most cucked man in the world. Then again, Sacher-Masoch was into cuckoldry so this is just part of the fantasy.

I want to dedicate a section to Wanda von Dunajew, the main female character in the book. She is the Venus in furs, the cruel mistress that Severin begged her to become. She’s reluctant to indulge Severin but gives it a try anyway. She warns him that she may not stay faithful to him and lives freely, describing herself as a pagan. Her worldviews are surprisingly modern? I found her character to be very refreshing despite the very obvious misogyny that the author holds, which is projected onto Severin. Wanda has become a new favourite character of mine very easily.

She stays true to her word and I really like how strongly she adheres to it (keeping it vague because if you ever read the book the ending really homes this in LOL).

The dynamics and views of the characters are so memorable to me, I’ve been thinking about this book nonstop since finishing it. It’s really hard to forget the ending too, it’s such a massive rollercoaster. Definitely give this book a try if it interests you, it’s a very unique experience.

Venus in Fur (2010) by David Ives

It's a different one I swear.. it's "Venus in Fur" (singular). Despite the title of this play, it's not actually a direct theatrical adaptation but rather a play about a direct theatrical adaptation. A play within a play. The way it utilizes the story of "Venus in Furs" to tell another story is very clever. (I'm getting a sense of deja vu... this happens in Jack Jeanne...!)

This play is about a playwright, Thomas Novachek, who is struggling to cast an actress for Wanda von Dunajew (familiar name!) in his theatrical adaptation of "Venus in Furs". As auditions wrap up for the night, an actress, coincidentally named "Vanda", bursts into the room and begs Thomas to let her audition. He's not in the mood for another audition but Vanda shoots her shot anyway. The play covers Vanda's audition and she makes Thomas play Severin alongside her.

I definitely recommend watching the play because Vanda's character is so much fun on stage (I ended up reading the script in bed one night because I was bored and I find it easier to read than watch things). Vanda is really funny and her boisterous personality contrasts well with the uptight Thomas. Part of the fun is seeing Vanda push his buttons and constantly challenge the things he says.

There's actually a version played by Hugh Dancy and Nina Arianda, both faces you might recognize from Hannibal if you've watched the show. The audio is a bit hard to understand, but you could watch it with the script up too. There are some other versions available on youtube as well which I want to get around to watching!

I don't want to spoil the fun for this one because I very genuinely enjoyed experiencing the play for myself but one thing I want to comment on is how clever it is that it's a play within a play. The roles that Thomas and Vanda play start to blur at some point and you start wondering if it's actually them or Severin and Wanda saying these things. I got a lot of laughs out of it too which was fun.

There's nothing crazy explicit in this, but considering the source material and the fact that Vanda is in lingerie for 90% of the play, I would say this isn't the most child-friendly watch. There are points in this where they might as well just be naked on stage and it'd have the same effect.

I definitely recommend "Venus in Fur"! I'd say watch the play but the script was still plenty of fun to read through too.

And now I wrap up the first edition of Rankaroid Book Reviews! I'll do my best to update the blog with what I read. I read pretty slowly and I'm not really sure what my next book will be... find out next time ;-P Thanks for reading if you did!

 AQUMARINE: DOCTOR'S ORDER

This is a soft-launch post about me starting work on my visual novel but also this will be a general monthly update blog post since I somehow almost forgot about this blog LOL.

I've started writing a visual novel about my OC universe, Aquamarine! If you know me at all you probably have seen bits about my OCs, I really love them and I've been working on them for about a year now. Aquamarine isn't necessarily the most narrative-driven story, I moreso have them to explore character dynamics and draw them for fun, but I've been thinking about making a short visual novel about them for a while now.

The VN is going to be called "Aquamarine: Doctor's Order", (or just Doctor's Order... AquaVN...) (subject to change) and it serves to introduce people to my OCs as well as make something with my characters. It's called Doctor's Order because the protag/narrator is Dr Lou Ambrose. She has appointments with the employees at Aquamarine, which will let the readers get to know everyone. It's nothing super serious, just fun!!

(Pictured: some starting screen concept art I made a few months ago. The title was "interview with the doctor" .... like the movie/show LOL)

So far I've written the first appointment (out of 4) and I've started to think about sprites. Writing takes priority of course, there's no 'novel' without it, but I haven't drawn my OCs as much lately because *cough*DRA*cough* so I wanted to practice again.

(Pictured: here's some sprite sketches I've done so far. Why is Nina half cut off? I drew her as a doodle but she ended up being a good size for sprites so she's there for scale...) (Drawing these also made me realize I won't be able to have height-accurate sprite scaling :,( The tallest characters would get cut off at the top/Dolly is too short next to them.)

This year I've played a few indie VNs that I really really enjoy and it's just super inspiring, so why not try to make my own? This includes things like the Danganronpa Another duology (which has completely taken over my life..), Of the Devil and Soul of Sovreignty. I highly recommend all of these titles! OTD and SOS are both currently in development, but have a few chapters available to play and have free demos to play! OTD episode 2 comes out next month and I'm sooo excited!

It might seem a bit odd, but I'm probably just going to privately release the VN (hoping I do finish it at some point!) between oomfs and friends because Aquamarine is just so personal to me that the thought of too many strangers seeing them makes me feel uneasy... Maybe if I feel more confident later on I'll do a public release. It's not like I have many followers in the first place lol, but still.

Any future VN updates will go on my Aquamarine blog (which is still a work in progress, lol. Still need to draw some assets...)

Okay I'm losing steam here now so I'm going to ramble briefly about drawing.. You can probably tell but I have a lot of trouble drawing heads/keeping things proportionate so I've been trying really hard to practice it better... I think I've gotten a bit better. I've also been practicing lineart because I get really frustrated doing it so I'm keeping things simple with a pixelated no-size-pressure brush.

Here's a Ranka I drew the other day! I got a bit lazy but it's still a cute pic. I try to draw her every year (I need to draw Sheryl too...) since she's my namesake (rankaroid)!

Final note: Final Fantasy XIV is back on the table. I resubbed a month before 7.4 patch release date to catch up on MSQ + etc thinking that I wouldn't really care and play like 1 hour per week ........................... I was really wrong. It's like I never took a break. I can't wait for arcadion final tier + 8.0 build up?! It looks like 7.4 is Krile-centric HEHEHEHE. Are we ready for 8.0 to be Krile-G'raha-Y'shtola? (cope)

Okay that's all I have really. Life's been OK. Nothing crazy has happened... I guess the craziest thing is that I only have 1 more monthly post to make this year. 2025 is almost over... I'll be making a 2025 faves / year retrospective next month for sure.

Thanks for reading >_o

 1+ YEAR OF AQUAMARINE

As you may or may not know, I have an OC universe named 'Aquamarine'. On October 8th, it was a year since I started thinking reaaally hard about my OCs, so I've marked it as the project's birthday.

I only really share Aquamarine in detail privately because they're such personal OCs that talking about them publicly makes me really nervous lol. Plus I feel like I don't actually have much to show anyway... I don't finish a lot of drawings and most of my writing is self indulgent crap lmao. Regardless, they mean a lot to me.

Aquamarine is undeniably a huge part of my life now, it's half of what I draw nowadays and it's ever-evolving. I've never had an OC project like this before, but it's really rewarding and I wish I had done something like this sooner. I have college to thank for Aquamarine even existing because it was actually my final major project. It was a mock-up for a game and I did two character designs to fill the brief, the two designs being Atlas and Dolly.

I am not sharing the original concept art because... because it's ugly.. sorry... But I will share the fake poster I made for it!

(Pictured: Dolly and Atlas. Their designs haven't really changed from here actually. Aqua Salvation was the original title but I've since changed it to Aquamarine...)

I started with just Atlas and Dolly, but in about Nov 2024, I started making new characters. I made Nina (who was still just called 'Boss') and then made Lou, her younger twin sister. Then in Dec 2024, I made Alba. I haven't added a new character officially yet because I'm still working on the 5 existing characters, but I've made just a teensy bit of progress on worldbuilding. It's a very slow thing for me, but thats ok! It's not something I want to push out immediately. I have thought about a few new characters though...

I've been slowly chipping away at a blog for my ocs where I just post anything relating to them on there. I don't have particularly grand plans for my characters, I definitely do want to write actual plotlines and stories but right now I'm just having fun with them and doing what I want. This isn't something very serious, just something I use as an outlet I suppose. I have concepts for a short VN about my OCs that works as an introduction to them all but it's just a concept right now :P

This is usually the part where I show you nice drawings I've made but frankly I don't really finish oc drawings LOL. It's mostly just sketches because I'm pretty lazy/slow at drawing plus I wanna make new reference pics for them all.

Here's the design lineup though!

When I made this updated reference for everyone, I decided to hold a poll for which design was everyone's favourite. I counted multiple votes too iirc, here are the results:

I've already posted this on the blog but it makes me laugh that Alba had zero votes... LOOOOOOOOOL. Anyway I'm planning to hold a second vote whenever I make new refs for everyone.. I'm just painfully slow at drawing and as of late I find it harder to focus. Not really sure why, but I'm pushing thru. I hope Alba gets maybe 1 vote.. but don't pity vote him.. Follow your heart...

I've also been back into DRA again (it faded for like a month but now it's back at full force) so I haven't been investing any time into aquamarines at all T__T)... LOL

No lie I started writing this blog post 2 weeks ago but I literally forgot. I was probably going to put more thoughts but I forgot.. So I'm sending it out to the world.. Thanks for reading if you did! >_o)*

I hope I can update the blog again next year and maybe I'll have more to show :P

 RUNE PIKA BEAM~

Happy September 21st!

Here is my monthly blog post. I was planning to do one sooner but... something new and malicious has taken over..........

THE HUNDRED LINE: LAST DEFENSE ACADEMY (but more on that after this little oc tidbit)

I was planing for my next blog post to be the unveiling of my oc blog, but sadly that's going to be delayed because I've been too busy playing hunline instead of working on ocs and drawing blog assets... oopsey. Check back another time for that...

Here's a WIP of my oc blog! It'll be a while :P (This picture is actually what the blog looks like, but the Dolly chibi on the right is just a concept) But it's essentially where I'll upload oc drawings, information and extra stuff. I'm planning to have a strawpage where people can send asks or talk to the characters too, if that interests you!

The blog already has some things on them but I want it to be more polished before I share it!!

Anyway back to the elephant in the room: hundred line. May or may not played almost 70 hours of this game in the last 2 weeks.. Even then I only have 2 endings!! (But that's because I did route 0 and then another ending that's the same length.. I'm told other routes tend to be shorter.. I'll play more soon but I want to dedicate time to drawing again...)

Honestly I can't even say much here because hunline is such a massive game and you really just have to give it a go. It has a free demo on steam if you want to try it. I played it a few months ago before release and found it so crazy because the characters are so odd but they've really grown on me since. Plus gameplay is fun! It's fire emblem-esque.

(Holy shit new fire emblem game btw... So excited. Who's ready for another decade of three houses discourse... Did you know I originally joined twitter to retweet FE3H fanart.. That twitter account has been long deleted but if you remember then you remember :V I WAS 14......)

Does anyone else get super into a video game and just stop drawing completely.. Because that's happening to me right now and it happened to me with FFXIV too... I thought I was free from the gaming-all-day curse but ah I guess not. My DRA side account is genuinely gathering dust right now but in my defense I've had a kind of crazy month. I'm still recovering in terms of health but I won't delve too deep into that. I'm doing well for the record :P A lot better.

Here's something I doodled between hundred line sessions. I really love the class armor/weapon concepts so I wanted to think about some characters in hunline! From left to right: Kanade SDRA2, my oc Lou and my oc Alba.

I'm about to say something so jobless but it's hard to juggle so many interests at a time LOL. I'm really into hunline right now obviously, but I also haven't moved on from DRA (will take a long time for me to move on) and I also have my ocs!!! I've been drawing them and writing for them again recently. It's really fun... I totally recommend making ocs to anyone. I never really considered myself an oc person before, but now I totally get it. I love my aquamarines and I hope that with my new blog that I can make others understand them too.

Okay that's all I have really. Maybe I'll make another blog post before the month ends... Actually it's almost Alba's birthday (Oct13) so maybe next post will be a little drawing for him. Though, that'll probably go on the oc blog.

WE'LL SEE!!!

Thanks for reading if you got down here! Take care of yourself x

WAIT.. BEFORE AUGUST ENDS...!

I already did a post this month but it's not illegal for me to post again. Anyway, I feel like my month has been evenly split into two and I wanted to write about it now that I'm starting to get back into things.

When I came home from the hospital, I was super art blocked and just generally kinda in the dumps. It's hard not to feel in the dumps with everything that happened to me lol but I've 100% been doing a lot better! I've been taking care of myself better and my friends and family have been here to support me thankfully.

This week has been treating me far more kinder and I'm honestly just really happy. Yesterday I went out with my friends to get some pancakes (was yummy!) and I've just been enjoying the company of so many different friends old and new, offline and online. I'm also not feeling weak anymore thanks to my treatment! It's really nice....

But yeah my August has essentially been pre-hospitalization and post-hospitalization... I've been slowly crawling out of my art block cave. When in doubt, do a study... I need to study more >_>)'

No one really asked for this but it's more for myself: DRA JUDGEMENT TIME. Am I still obsessed with DRA? Yes. Absolutely. It's always on my mind. But letting the game marinate longer really does make me appreciate it more. It's honestly a life-changing game for me lol. Plus me and my friends have been spreading the game amongst our friends... DRA domination soon. I'll be back to check in September.

It probably seems like my interest in DRA has dwindled with my lower activity on my side account, but the truth is that I've just been dedicating time to my OCs again lol.

(I have the most fun drawing/writing Ninalba. Can you tell... I know it's really obvious...)

This drawing is actually decently layered but I mostly wanted to draw them in wedding outfits I designed a few months ago. Despite the drawing, neither of them actually like the concept of marriage but I couldn't resist drawing it... it's based on this pic below.

I feel like I post my OCs a lot but I just don't have much information publicly available. Aquamarine is an extremely personal thing to me so I'm just rather apprehensive about sharing too much lol... I'm working on a blog for them that I'll share when I have more things on it :-) ... I'm sure you can figure some things out yourself though lol.

I have plans for making a short visual novel about them too so that people can meet them, but that's a lot of work.. I do have a lot of concepts. Maybe one day :P

(It's another Ninalba pic... Do you think it's love? I wish I knew what they seemed like to an outsider who knows nothing about them...)

Anyway I'm going to end this blog post here. It's a bit longer than I want it to be despite already cutting out a decent chunk lol. I'm still kicking and I'm going to spend time drawing 500 pictures I think. Thank you for reading if you got down here! Take care of yourself x

Probably the craziest few days of the year

On the 15th of August 2025, I went to the grocery store to get some food. I collapsed and had the ambulance called for me.... which never arrived lol. They're calling the UK the greatest nation on the planet. I did make it to the hospital for the record, they got me a taxi, but lol?

I was hospitalized and received 2 units of blood. I was discharged yesterday and now I'm a lot better! But yeah it was a very crazy experience. I was so scared and humiliated. It's all over so I can admit those things, but I very genuinely feared for my life. I couldn't get up, my arms and hands went numb, my stomach was killing me. It was scary... But the employees and strangers at the grocery store made me feel safe. The kindness of strangers is something I am truly thankful for.

Being at the hospital is never fun... I stayed there for 2 nights and it was pretty stressful despite the fact that I spent most of my time sleeping or resting. I got my blood drawn about 5 times in the last few days and I have thin veins so it was a lot of poking around my arms :,V ...

My skin and most noticeably my lips are super pink now...?! I never noticed how pale I looked but wow I feel and look more alive. This actually isn't the first time I've received blood, it happened in 2020 right before covid hit. I also noticed my skin was super pink after lol.

My medical junk isn't quite over yet, I've been referred to a haematology clinic for further investigation and I'm going to see a gynaecologist as well. Hoping things go well...

Okay this is the part where I sound crazy but I do feel super bummed not only because of everything that happened.... But I also missed Akane Taira's (of Danganronpa Another Fame) birthday, August 15.... I've been hyping myself up for it for an entire month because she's one of my favourite characters of all time and this all happens on her birthday..?!!? I still haven't finished her birthday art lol.. But it's fine really, better late than never, no? ;-P

And this is all excluding the things that happened in my personal life lol. Iykyk
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Usually this blog is reserved for things like my interests but this is easily the craziest thing that's happened to me in a while so I think it's worth writing about lol... As usual, thanks for reading if you did! Take care of yourself and if you feel weak, listen to your body and let it rest.
