LET'S TALK: Pictomancer Krile!
It has been a week since Tokyo fanfest and there is so much to go through! In this post I'm going to focus on Krile's new job: pictomancer.
Of course, spoilers for MSQ up to patch 6.5, read at your own discretion.
Krile's new job
(I am the happiest person on the planet. I cried a little during the fanfest trailer reveal.)
I drew this Krile as fast as I could
after fanfest (though, I slept first.. fanfest was at 1am my time).
There were many details I couldn't make out but one thing I'm proud of
is being able to tell she had some bottles attached to her bag. I also
considered not adding the background because I was worried it wasn't
very readable but everyone I asked liked the background (ty..)
Despite my previous blog post, I am
extremely elated that Krile is going to be a pictomancer. My worries
were mainly if pictomancy would fit Krile's aesthetics but to my
delight, they kept her design intact and feels super fresh!
I did get some details wrong in my drawing but that's ok!! Since then we have gotten a new picture of Krile in her new gear and she looks soo cute!!! I really love this new design, it feels cute, adventurous, and still feels like Krile with her iconic yellow cat ears. A very lovely modern design which has been long overdue.
Something I want to point out are some details on her outfit. The purple gems present on the necklace and paint brush seem to be from the brooch on her original coat. Perhaps Tataru reconstructs her old hoodie or takes the brooch from the original to create the necklace and embed one into the brush. As well as that, Krile is wearing the earring she found in the letter from 6.5! (Thank god it's not green mage.. I am so glad.. so glad..)
I suspect that she puts on the earring while not knowing it's origin/purpose, or perhaps it's revealed to her by either Erenville or Wuk Lamat. I think maybe it also serves as a job stone of sorts which allows her to become a pictomancer.
Let's talk about the location in this image. It's definitely Sharlayan with the water, lush vegetation and white stone buildings. I spent about 20 minutes after writing the previous sentence to figure out where this was. Which ended up to be kind of a waste of time, it's not even in the overworld (LOL) and I ended up flying over every Sharlayan location ingame (Old Sharlayan, Labyrinthos, Idyllshire and even the Dravanian Hinterlands).
I even briefly considered the Omphalos but I knew that wasn't right at all. It took me a second to realize the arch behind her was a launchpad in Aetherfont.
She is just outside of the 2nd boss (roughly X:14 Y:7). The architecture was very telling it was Sharlayan, but not which specific location. In hindsight, it's obvious especially if you do your roulettes regularly but I don't do expert or 90 roulettes at the moment since I don't need tomes or want to run dungeons. But this begs the question: why?
In all honesty, I have no idea. I doubt it is to test her prowess with pictomancy since she can just do that in Old Sharlayan if she really wanted. Perhaps it is to harvest aether? Still kind of unlikely in my head. Another thing that comes to mind is perhaps to draw some tough enemies. Maybe she just needs to do some artist studies in a high risk area.. It's just a bit odd since Aetherfont is a restricted area.
Krile seems to be ogling her brush, as if it's the first time she's seen it. Maybe she puts on the earring she recieved from the letter and it materalizes the pictomancer gear... Maybe not.. Sounds kind of silly.. Perhaps she had just cast her first spell and is impressed by what she can do. I'm sure she gears up before heading to Aetherfont, probably stepping out from the Baldesion annex with WOL and company to see her new gear. I honestly can't make much out of that singular image. There's not alot of reason, unless I'm missing something....
Pictomancer
Onto pictomancy, it's such a fun and lively job! I definitely want to pick it up for Dawntrail since I am a big fan of all casting jobs. I love the job gear, it's a really cool interpretation of Relm's (FF6) gear but feels modern and unique to FFXIV. One thing I am super excited to see is pictomancer LB3, it's definitely going to be something goofy and extravagant, maybe something akin to what Krile does in the trailer (giant rainbow spriggan with butterflies and fireworks). It is really lovely to have a new casting job that is not tied to the -mage suffix.
The biggest problem I face is that Roid is canonically god awful at drawing. Maybe his drawings are so ugly it kills you by looking at them.
I have seen talk about the job being a new discipline like machinist, but thinking about it I think it could go either way. I think it could be an ancient job since drawing has been part of humanity since the oldest of times. It probably doesn't differ too greatly to scholar or summoner writing geometries in their books either. I think it could also be a new job that has been recently invented, which could explain why people are so impressed by Krile's display in Tural (though I am sure people would crowd around regardless).
Personally, I think that pictomancer is a Thavnairian discipline. The job gear feels like existing Thavnairian clothing and I believe that the job could also take inspiration from Holi, the Hindu festival. People dance in the streets and throw vibrant dyes at eachother to spread love and joy amongst eachother. I think that pictomancy is a job that exists to spread happiness to those who witness the drawings come to life, which aligns with Krile's personality and allows her to fight alongside her comrades.
Why pictomancer?
Now, why would Krile even become a pictomancer in the first place? I think that Krile would finally try
to become a fighter like her peers. In Eureka, she muses to the WOL that
she isn't very well fit to fight the enemies in Hydatos so I think that before we depart on our next adventures in Tural, Krile decides to become a fighter so she can fend for herself and protect others.
Krile is already established to be talented with magic, specifically healing, but thankfully that doesn't restrict her to being a healer. She is listed as simply a "Mage" in the unending codex, so I'm glad she gets to become the poster girl of pictomancy. In her days of attendance at the Studium, Krile becomes close with the Leveilleur twins. She is shown to be close with specifically Alphinaud and teases him often, so I think that she might have picked up drawing alongside Alphinaud in their free time as students. Of course Alphinaud is extremely talented and often flaunts his talents, but maybe Krile painted with him occasionally. I love to imagine how the scions were during their time in Sharlayan, especially of the bonds we are told of but never get to see (Urianger and the twins.. Krile.. G'raha..)
I think how it will go is that Erenville and Wuk Lamat ask the WOL to join their campaign for Wuk Lamat to become the next ruler of Tural and Krile decides that she wants to join them in battle. Or perhaps Erenville and Wuk Lamat are shown Krile's mysterious letter and are able to tell her more details, which leads Krile on the path of pictomancy. I honestly don't know how Aetherfont fits into all of this though. We know G'raha will be present as well from the preview images on the special website.
We will also likely get to know what the mysterious archon letter from 6.4 (Thancred and Urianger) is all about. I believe that the scion split will be the Students of Baldesion and WOL assisting Wuk Lamat in the contest for the throne and that the other archon scions will split off to assist another candidate, most likely the Mamool Ja next to Wuk Lamat. It seems that the Miqo'te guy on the right side is a comrade of the Mamool Ja and the Hyur lady at the top is probably another candidate or maybe from another area like Solution 9. HOWEVER! This post is about Krile and pictomancer. More speculation about Dawntrail will be in another post.
(I was originally going to make this post about Wuk Lamat too, but I have too much to say about pictomancer.)
And with that I end this post! Thank you for reading and let me know what you think :) ! Feel free to comment or message me.
